Buschman Park - Spruce Creek Road, The following was a press release by the City of Port Orange. PORT ORANGE, FL - The public is invited to attend the official Grand Opening Ceremony of Buschman Park on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 5:30 p.m., 4575 Spruce Creek Road. Under construction for the last eight months, this passive recreational facility will now be accessible to the public. Mayor Dorothy L. Hukill and members of the City Council will be in attendance. Twenty-three acres in all, Buschman Park features access to a lake, a walking path, and parking. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy the native landscape, a walkover bridge, and a chance to observe wildlife undisturbed. Mayor Hukill stated that “the completion of this park means a great deal to the community more than just a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Buschman Park plays an important role in the restoration efforts to cleanup Rose Bay.” Purchased by the City with assistance from the St. Johns River Water Management District in 1997, Buschman Park is a recreational/stormwater retention facility. Located next to the Halifax Canal, the park will redirect the canal’s water into its lake to remove pollutants before it’s discharged into Rose Bay, thus improving the bay’s water quality. Designated as an Outstanding Florida Water by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Rose Bay has suffered for more than fifty years from restricted water flow, road pollutants, and septic tank leaching. As a result, the bay’s water has turned from a clear blue to a dull brown color. The Halifax Canal starts north of Daytona Beach; and along its route south to Port Orange, it collects the oils and greases from area roads. Prior to the opening of Buschman, the canal’s untreated water discharged directly into Rose Bay ///////////////////////// and Buschman Park, April 2006
