DECEASED MEMBERS
OF THE LONG ISLAND STATE PARKWAY POLICE
The following was sent to us by Larry
Mahoney,
in 2005. Author unknown to us.
THE FINAL INSPECTION
The Policeman stood
and faced his God,
This for all must
come to pass.
He hoped his shoes
were shining,
Just as brightly as
his brass.
“Step forward now,
Policeman.
How shall I deal
with you?
Have you always
turned the other cheek?
To my Church have
you been true?”
The Policeman
squared his shoulders, saying,
“No Lord, I guess I
ain’t,
Because those of us
that carry badges,
Can’t always be a
Saint.”
“I’ve had to work
most Sundays,
And at times my talk
was gruff.
And I’ve seen so
much violence,
Because the streets
are awfully rough.”
“But I NEVER took a
penny,
That wasn’t mine to
keep.
Though I worked a
lot of overtime,
When the bills just
got too steep.”
“And I never passed
a cry for help,
Though at times I
shook with fear.
And sometimes, God,
forgive me,
But I wept unmanly
tears.”
I know I don’t
deserve a place,
Among the people
here.
They never really
wanted me around,
Except to calm their
fear.”
“If you’ve a place
for me, O Lord,
It needn’t be too
grand.
I never expected or
had too much,
But if You don’t,
I’ll understand.”
There was silence
all around the Throne,
Where Saints had
often trod.
And the Policeman
stood waiting quietly,
For the Judgment of
his God.
“Step forward now,
Policeman,
You’ve borne your
burdens well.
Come walk a beat on
Heaven’s streets….
You’ve done your
time in Hell.”

Ronald George Hoerner
Towers Security Director Helped Woman From
Fire
October 7, 2001
Ronald Hoerner was a month and a half away from celebrating his
one-year wedding anniversary.
The plan was to have dinner at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, where he and
his wife, Barbara, had their wedding reception; then they would eat the saved
top part of their wedding cake.
But none of that will happen, because the 58-year-old Queens native is
missing in the World Trade Center tragedy. Hoerner was director of security at
the trade center for Summit Security, his office situated in the B2 level of the
south tower.
"We were very, very close," Barbara Hoerner said. "We did everything together
and had our whole life to look forward to."
Barbara Hoerner was told that her husband's last moments were spent helping a
woman out of the burning tower.
Born and raised in Richmond Hill and living in Long Beach before settling in
Massapequa Park, Ronald Hoerner used to patrol the Wantagh Parkway as a Long
Island Parkway police officer before the department merged with the state police
in 1980. Promoted to investigator in 1993, he also worked in the forensic
identification unit, was a public information officer, court liaison, and crime
prevention officer before retiring in 1994 after 27 years of combined service.
An only child, he knew a great deal about cars. He collected them, washed his
own every week and enjoyed car races. His '79 Datsun DX sits in the garage, with
25,000 original miles.
Although it is almost a month since the Sept. 11 attacks, his wife said, "I
haven't accepted it because they haven't found him, and maybe after the memorial
I'll hit a wall of reality."
She remembers him as a man who would look out for everyone and who always did
the right thing. She saw him as a family man who always looked out for his three
step-daughters and six grandkids from a previous family.
Barbara Hoerner thought that her husband was more at risk as a state trooper,
not in a World Trade Center office.
"I'll be able to go on, but I'll never be the same," she said. "I felt I was
meant to be with him."
