DAYTONA BEACH -- A man who slammed his car into a
25-year-old woman riding her bicycle on the sidewalk Monday night has been
charged with committing a hate crime, police said.

Cosby Thomas
Cosby, 56, hopped out of his car and yelled racial slurs at Mekeda Cato
after he struck her with his vehicle at 701 S. Atlantic Ave. in Daytona
Beach, police said. According to police, Cato, who is black, was riding
along the sidewalk on the west side of the road when Cosby's car jumped the
curb and slammed into her "for no apparent reason", police said.
Cato, of Daytona Beach, was taken to the hospital with a
fractured left leg and and unknown internal injuries.
Cosby, of Port Orange, was charged with aggravated battery
and simple battery. Both were classified as hate crimes.
After Cosby's car struck Cato, it slammed into a tree and
the front porch of a nearby house before rolling over several times and
coming to a stop. According to several witnesses, Cato then hopped out of
his car and began to scream at the crowd, telling them, "help me kill these
(racial slur for black people)" .... . . . . . .

. .. . . . . . .On the southern end of Nova Road, and still being
built, is an array of strip malls which are maybe 10 percent occupied, or less.
Solution: No new building permits except for fire or police stations for three
years. Give the real estate market time to rebound and more time for those
charged with finding viable solutions for school issues, traffic, water, sewer
-- all of the things that the developers seem not to want to discuss.
It's time to tighten our belts and get ready for a long hard ride. We have
left a legacy of waste, overindulgence and greed for our children and
grandchildren to deal with.

Surfers out in force for storm swell
The waves are perfect for surfers, 5 to 6 feet, but a little strong
for merely average swimmers. And it will stay that way today.
Wheelchair can't keep this surfer from the waves
The first time C.C. Roberts sat in a wheelchair, his rehab nurses
could tell he was ready to be independent. But the car crash in 1997
that killed one friend and gave another brain injuries had given
this pro wake boarder, one-time sushi chef, little brother and
thrill seeker a new label to live up to.
Loggerhead nesting appears to be making a comeback
As slowly as a mama turtle crawls up the beach to dig her nest,
