Almost all  of the images of L.I. State  Parkway Police officers
were sent to by various people.  POI Hank thanks them all, and
especially Jim Lubin, who I  think contributed the most images.

---------------------------------------------

 From Larry  Mahoney;

Up until to 1946, troopers assigned to Troop L were assigned to the State Parkways and Parks.  Troop K patrolled all of Suffolk Co.  In 1946, when the State Park Police was formed, the Troopers patrolled the Parkways and I think it was considered  Troop K, and Troop L was disbanded.  Troop K still patrolled Suffolk County in all 10 townships.  Troopers preferred to be assigned to Troop K because they received subsistence,  which added a fair amount to their salary.  In 1950, Troopers left the parkways and Troop K no longer patrolled anywhere in Nassau Co.  Troopers remained in western Suffolk Co until 1960, and still patrolled eastern Suffolk Co.  These Troopers were assigned to Troop K until 1980.......

POI Hank brings us up to date:
From 1946 until 1980 the L.I. State Park Police patrolled the L.I. State Parks and I think it was in 1948
that the organization began patrolling the Parkways.
Through the years the official name of the organization was changed three times
and the last name it was known as was the L.I. State Parkway Police.
In 1980,  by an act of legislation, New York State Police, Troop L,
was reformed  to patrol the Long Island State Parkways. Most  members of the former L.I. State Parkway Police
had an option to remain with the newly reorganized New York State Parks Police,
or transfer to the newly reinstituted  Troop L of the New York State Police. --- hank springer

Joe Teller

Dear Sir,

I recently "Googled" my name and your website came up in the image results.
Much to my surprise, there was a picture of my uncle Joe Teller in his
police uniform.  My sons immediately saw the resemblance of him and me and
we all were shocked and excited to see his picture on the web.  The history
of the Long Island State Park Police was very good.  If you come across any
more photos of my uncle, please post them as my aunt is still alive and she
would be thrilled to see them.

P.S. - When Joe Teller retired from the Long Island police, he then moved
out to Porterville, California and joined the sheriffs department.  Sadly he
passed away in 1989, the year my sons were born.  Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Teller,  June 2, 2007

----- POI Hank Springer replies:

I was a seasonal patrolman working at Jones Beach in 1958.
It was my very first tour of duty, 4x12, and I was picked up
by the station wagon, from Field 2, and with 5 other police officers
we were transported to the central mall area, post 17.

In those days, it was legal to drink beer on the beach, and a large group
of kids that had come to the beach in 4 cars, drank more than their
fair share of alcohol.  They were rowdy and disorderly.

Sgt. Joe Teller, had us wait up on the board walk.  He went down on the beach, alone,
impressive in starch like uniform and muscular size, and told the kids their fun
was over.  He had them dump their beer in the sand and then told them
to meet the waiting officers up on the boardwalk.  They asked Sgt. Teller
if they were being arrested, and he told them, "maybe, it depends on your attitude".

The youngsters were cocky and joking around.  On the boardwalk,
Sgt. Teller told us to escort them to their cars in field 4.
Some of them started with they weren't ready to leave yet,
and the ring leader got pushed by Sgt. Teller, and told to lead the
pack to the cars, and if he didn't want to, then he could stay back here
and not go home with the guys in the cars.  People on the beach who were annoyed
by the rowdy group, clapped for Sgt. Teller.

They walked very slowly, and Sgt. Teller said, take your time,
"it will give me time to decide if I am making a mistake in letting you go home."
Most of the group started walking faster.
One guy turned to me and asked if he could take a pee.
Sgt. Teller told him to pee in his pants.

When we got to their cars, and it's a long walk to field 4 from the boardwalk,
we checked the drivers' licenses and took stock as to whether they were fit to drive.
Off they went, and this was my first meeting with Sgt. Teller, and my first police incident,
on my first tour of duty.  I must tell you, that I wondered if things like this were going to happen
on every tour.

Sgt. Teller was a colorful, good guy.  He knew what Law and Order was about,
and dedicated his life to it.  His philosophy was -- be a good citizen
and enjoy the freedom of America.  I think Joe Teller still spoke the German language
taught to him by his parents or grandparents.

When Joe Teller became Lieutenant, he called me up and told me he thought
it was pretty clever of me to label my special report of a juvenile club house having been built
in the woods of Bethpage State Parkway, in which report I requested the L.I. State Park Commission
to tear down the club house.  I named the report, "Illegal Erection", and Lt. Teller said there was
no need to change the title, but wanted me to know he appreciated a sense of humor.

Joe Teller was good friends with George Wilhelm, and maybe George has some images of Joe.
I don't have any more images of Joe, but if I come across any, I will post them on this web site.

Joe Teller  made a visit to our L.I. Babylon, Hdq. in 1978?, and stopped in my office
to chat.  He filled me in about working as a sheriff deputy in California.

Joe, thanks for writing.  If you have any memories of Uncle Joe
to share with us, please write again.  --- hank springer

                                     Larry Czaplyski?

Hello,

I enjoyed looking through the L.I. Parkway Police section of your website.
I just wanted to let you know that the photo captioned "Larry Czaplyski?"  is definitely my father, Larry Czaplyski.

You did a great job of putting the site together. I recognized my father's friends Mike Ruiz and Tony Guzowski--brought back a lot of memories.

By the way, my father is still living  in St. James, NY  with my Mom, Eileen.  Their health is nip and tuck lately, but they're doing OK for 81 years old. Feel free to pass their contact information along to any of my Dad's old friends, he'd love to hear from them.

Best Regards,

Vince Czaplyski

bulletPOI Hank passed on the address and phone number of Larry and Eileen to Jim Lubin.  If you want to contact Larry Czaplyski send
me an e mail request and  I will furnish you with his address and phone  number.   Hank    poimages@cfl.rr.com

RECEIVED FROM JIM LUBIN

MARCH 13, 2008

Hank,  We were advised by Bill Lee that Larry Czaplyski's wife passed away.  Have no other information except that she will be cremated and will be buried in veterans cemetery on Long Island.

I think I have a better image of Mike Capasso.
As I go through the parkway 8 disks in my archive vault, I will find it.
But if you have a better one of Mike, please send it to me.

On the far left is Brian Mangan.
Brian had been with the parkway police, switched over to the New York State Police,
and then switched over to the New York State Parks Police.

P.O. Joseph Miata (Center)- became a NYS Park Police  Officer in 1980
Seasonal Police Officer Steven Chand (right) - at that time was with Old Brookville PD.

This image shows the boardwalk overlooking the band shell at Jones Beach State Park.
Perhaps 1982?

------------------------------------------------------------

Clif Smith thinks this may be
Mike Capasso or perhaps Mike DiBenedetto.

I saw the photo of the officer in front of the Jones Beach Bath House
and while I am flattered that Cliff  thought it was my dad
I can say without hesitation it was not Mike Capasso.
My dad for one never wore those high motorcycle boots and it was not Mikey DiBen
who did look like my dad and on a personal  note was my Mom's second cousin.
--- Mike Capasso.

                                           Who?

                      Name? Loop Parkway?
