MAY 25, 2008

Today I went to the first graduation of the class of 2008 from the new Mainland High School in Daytona Beach.  A friend of mine's niece graduated SUMMA CUM LAUDE and unfortunately we were unable to locate the rest of the family due to the thousand's of people there.  Here are some pictures of the graduation also the inside of one of the new complex's inside the Ocean Center.  I just hope that the picture of took of Chelsey Danille Burke showed up as it was taken from quite a distance and could only be seen on a large television screen.

PORT ORANGE FIRE DEPARTMENT

MAY 15, 2008

IMAGES BY CATHY MCNA, PORT ORANGE, FL.

=================================

As of today's date this is how far Station 52 in New Smyrna Beach is progressing.  I was very disappointed when I went by Station 75 as it is not coming along as fast as I would have thought.  From what you can see in the picture, it will be a state of the art fire station and a great compliment to the New Smyrna Fire Department.

----------------------------------------------

Here is a picture of our new Battalion Chief Joe Wulfing in Port Orange.  I went to see him today and talked to the guys at Station 73 on City Center and Joe was very busy catching up on paperwork, etc. so we can all be assured that his promotion will be a great asset for the Port Orange Fire Department.  What a smile?  Get's you doesn't it?

---------------------------------------------

Went to Station 73 on City Center to see the new Commander, Joe Wulfing and thought I would take a picture of four of the firefighters who were studying for the new brush truck.  Their names are, Lt. Frank Sheridan, Vince Jones, Mike Amaia, and Mike Michaud.  Let me tell you, after looking just at the book they are in for some real training here.  Some people think (as I once did) that when you get a brand new state of the art Brush Truck that you can just get on and go.  This is not true.  There is a lot of training involved for this new piece of equipment and am anxiously awaiting my time to see it first hand and see their training.

RECEIVED MAY 3, 2008

FROM CATHY MCNA, PORT ORANGE, FL.

Hi Hank,

Here are some pictures of Cinco De Mayo at the Cancun Lagoon in Daytona Beach starring "Boston".  Also there was a band from Jacksonville called the Yankee Slickers and they were great.  Met a lot of very nice people there and as we were leaving I ran into a Marine and just thought it appropriate to also celebrate our men in the armed forces by taking his picture.  Also gave him the website address and when they are all deported they will have somewhere to read all about what is going on in Port Orange.  There was also a very young girl that wants to be in a band and play guitar but, her picture unfortunately did not turn out and for this I apologize.

All of you know it is almost impossible to take pictures of a band that is constantly moving around so a lot of my pictures I have not included of Boston because they are so blurred.  Remember to reflect and pray for all of our armed forces overseas!!!

1711hrs: RCC advised vehicle rollover
1711hrs: Ch70 and EVAC 92 held up by the train
1711hrs: E71 advised they are on scene of an overturned vehicle one mile into New Smyrna Beach on the northbound side.  Establishing command and in investigative mode.
1712hrs: Bat52 is responding as Ch70 is held up by the train

1713hrs: E72 is on scene
1713hrs: Command advising they have one patient and are now switching to medical mode
1713hrs: Command to E72------extrication needed and need hydraulics
1715hrs: E53 and Ch70 on scene
1716hrs: Bat52 advised Ch70 that he was cancelling
1717hrs: Ch70 assuming command and E71 will be operations

1737hrs: As I was going southbound on US1 I saw both E71 and E72 coming back to Port Orange and did not see them extricate the patient nor witness them doing what they do best.
1741hrs: I arrived on scene and exited my vehicle to take some pictures
1742hrs: The Motors unit from New Smyrna Beach and FHP trooper were very accommodating to me and allowed me across the road to do so.  As I was there I talked to the witness of the accident and he told me that when he called 911 he said that the vehicle had rolled over between New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange bridges and the street behind him was Sleepy Hollow.  If this is true, then why was Port Orange fire and police responding to a call in New Smyrna Beach?  The first call dispatched stated that it was by the Rose Bay Bridge which is in Port Orange.  I know that when people call that they sometimes do not know where they are but, this person said Sleepy Hollow and that is definitely in New Smyrna Beach.  Then I was told by the Sergeant in New Smyrna Beach that I was not allowed at the scene and had to leave.  The trooper helped me across the street and everyone was so nice in helping me turn my vehicle around with stopping traffic so I could cross the median.  (Not to mention though that E53 was also leaving the scene and this did help me).

 RESIDENTIAL FIRE

5669 WOOD ST., PORT ORANGE, FL.

Cathy McNa visited the location where the trailer home

burned down late Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008

Cathy took the following images on March 24, 2008

and makes some comments.

=================================

This picture I thought would show the hope that shall be bestowed upon this family as it is Mother Mary and survived the fire almost in tact.

I went to Wood St and met with the sister of the homeowner, Mitzi and her husband Eric who showed me around the whole house.  It was quite amazing that four vehicles were completely destroyed including a Corvette.  Unscathed was some plastic containers that carry baby wipes.  Even the children's toys in the back yard were melted along with the recycle bin.  The house to the left of the house had melted the siding and on the other side of the house the fence, trees were destroyed and there was also considerable damage to the outside of the house.  Mitzi told me that they have not been able to locate their two cats and one hamster did not survive.

I also spoke with several neighbors and I must disagree with their comments at this time because I cannot believe that it took the first engine 20 minutes to get on scene.  I do understand that there was a problem with the fire hydrant but, most of the witnesses stated that it would not have made a difference as the house was fully engulfed by the time the fire department was on scene.

--------------------------------------------

POI HANK ASKED PORT ORANGE FIRE/RESCUE

TO GIVE US THE TIMES OF THE FIRST CALL TO RCC

ABOUT THIS FIRE AND THE TIME THE FIRST FIRE ENGINE

 ARRIVED ON SCENE.

HERE ARE THE ANSWERS:

Hank, in response to your questions on the Wood Street fire,

  1. The call was received at 23:20:45

  2. The first dispatch was 23:21:28

  3. The first unit arrived at 23:26:19 (Battalion) total time for first unit on scene 4:51

  4. the first engine arrived at 23:27:01 total time for first engine on scene  6:28

Based on the times from RCC the response times for this call were appropriate.

Ken Burgman

Division Chief of Operations

Port Orange Fire Rescue

----------------------------------------------------

The neighbor that called 911 first advised me that he could not call on his land line phone because by this time the phone lines were already destroyed by the fire so he had to find his cell phone.  When he called he was standing outside and the fire was so intense that he could barely breathe.  He also stated he could hear the people screaming and windows blowing out on the other side of the house.  He and his family were almost overcome by smoke and were so relieved that the Fire Chief was telling the firefighters to save his house.  All in all he was very happy that everyone made it out and hopes that the families cats are all right. --- Cathy McNa
