“Port Orange
Paramedics Triumph in
Emergency Medical
Services’ ‘Super Bowl’ ”
PORT ORANGE, FLA
July 17, 2008-Port Orange Fire Rescue’s Medical Competition Team was
recently named the 2008 International Clinical Conference (ClinCon) Champion
at the Bill Shearer Advanced Life Support (ALS) Competition in Orlando,
Fla. This competition tests the best “street” paramedic teams against each
other with very challenging and realistic medical scenarios.
Port Orange Fire
Rescue’s team, consisting of Paramedics Bryan Smith, Mike Michaud, Chris
Taylor, and Colleen Fitchett, placed second out of 27 Advanced Life Support
(ALS) teams in the preliminary scenario on July 9, 2008. They went on to
beat out four other Florida teams in the final competition, held on July 10,
2008. Defeating teams from across the Nation-including “big city”
departments such as New York City-required exemplary skill in emergency
medical care. This competition is the "Super Bowl" of events for the
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field. The team was awarded the prestigious
ClinCon traveling trophy and the esteemed bragging rights of being the best
of the best.

News Release
For Immediate Release:
“Port Orange Fire
Chief Receives Special Recognition”
PORT ORANGE, FLA
July 7, 2008-Each year, the Port Orange-South Daytona Rotary Club honors one
of its members as the “Rotarian of the Year” for consistent dedication to
serving the community and the world. This year, Fire Chief Thomas G. Weber
was chosen from among 61 members as the “2007-2008 Rotarian of the Year.”
Jim Kotas,
President of the Port Orange-South Daytona Rotary Club, says of Chief Weber,
“When it comes to demonstrating Rotarian traits, he truly ‘walks the
talk’.” From heading up a team of Rotarians in a humanitarian mission to
Belize to mentoring local school children, Chief Weber clearly exemplifies
this year’s Rotary theme-“Rotary Shares.” He was instrumental in making the
foster children Christmas project a success, and was also instrumental in
the Casino night fundraiser, Halifax River cleanup, and the Rotary’s
exchange student program. Chief Weber was recognized at Rotary’s annual new
officers induction banquet on Friday, June 27th.

News Release
“Five Cities Unite in Celebration of EMS Week”
PORT ORANGE,
FLA May 8, 2008—Since
December 2003, the Interlocal Agreement for the Establishment of
the Local Government Fire-Rescue and Emergency Medical Services
Automatic Aid and Closest Unit Response System (commonly
referred to as “closest unit response”) has greatly improved
emergency services on the east side of the County. In
Celebration of 2008 EMS Week (May 18th-24th),
the Regional EMS Committee, under the Regional Communications
Center will be awarding a recognition plaque to each of the five
City Councils that are part of the RCC Group. This is an
expression of the EMS Committee’s gratitude for supporting these
five agencies to work as one. Looking at response times in
terms of miles, not City boundaries, allows emergency responders
to deliver the fastest, highest quality of care to our citizens
and visitors. Port Orange Fire-Rescue credits this agreement in
large part to their selection by the Florida Department of
Health as the "2007 EMS Provider of the Year."
The presentations will occur during City Council Meetings

For Immediate Release:
“The Wildland Ultra XT—
Now Showing at a Fire Department Near
You”
PORT ORANGE, FLA Apr.
24, 2008—Just in time for brushfire season, Port Orange Fire-Rescue has
taken delivery of a Wildland Ultra XT—the latest innovation in wildland
fire control, which translates into the best protection for our
residents and their property. Unlike traditional wildland firefighting
apparatus, the Wildland Ultra XT is capable of traveling off-road while
carrying 2,000 gallons of water, 50 gallons of foam, and a crew of six
firefighters. “This vehicle will allow our firefighters to take a
significant amount of firefighting capability directly to the fire
line,” asserts Fire Chief Thomas G. Weber. Port Orange Fire-Rescue is
the first department east of the Mississippi to acquire an apparatus
with these capabilities. It is essentially two vehicles for the price
of one in that it will serve as a replacement for two 25-year old
vehicles. The purchase was funded by a well field mitigation grant and
impact fees. After training is completed, the Wildland Ultra XT will be
placed in service and available for responses.

News

For Immediate Release:
“Port Orange Firefighters Dine with
Students”
PORT ORANGE, FLA Feb. 13, 2008—Chicken
nuggets, green beans, orange slices, and a side of life safety. At
least twice a month, students at each of Port Orange’s six elementary
schools have the opportunity to visit with Port Orange firefighters
during lunchtime. It is part of an effort to keep students mindful of
safety messages throughout the year—not just during Fire Prevention Week
in October.
With the
many demands upon a school’s schedule, it can be challenging to find the
time for vital life safety information. As a result, Port Orange
Fire-Rescue is continually seeking innovative ways to communicate these
messages in ways that do not detract from the curriculum. The informal
setting of the cafeteria allows students to speak freely with
firefighters, ask them questions, and recognize them as friends. In
addition to the school lunch programs, Port Orange-Fire Rescue personnel
have created safety tips for inclusion on the school’s morning
announcements. Also, life safety messages are grounded in other core
topics that teachers are required to address—such as our 911
presentation, which teaches students the importance of maps in the fire
service. As Fire Chief Thomas Weber emphasizes, the benefit of this
education is two-fold because “children continue to be our successful
conduit to get safety messages home to families.”
