From the Port Orange Police
Department
On
this date at approximately 1636 hours, Port Orange Police and Fire/Rescue
units responded to the 1300 block of Dunlawton Avenue regarding a possible
electrocution. Once on scene investigation revealed that a worker for East
Coast Utilities was working from a bucket truck and was transferring power
lines to upgraded concrete power poles. The worker was rendered unconscious
when he came into contact with live power equipment at the top of the
poles. This action caused the power to go out in the area. Other East Coast
Utility employees working in the immediate area lowered the bucket boom and
began to render aid to the injured worker while police and rescue units
arrived on scene. The subject was immediately transported to Halifax
Hospital via EVAC ambulance. The worker was pronounced deceased at 1711
hours. His information is being held pending notification of next of kin.
OSHA was contacted as part of protocol and was advised of the above
incident.
Additional information:
East
Coast Utilities, based out of Melbourne, Florida, is contracted to complete
improvements on the electrical system in the above area as part of the
Florida Power and Light storm secure plan (Storm secure is FPL’s
comprehensive plan aimed at strengthening the electric system against
hurricane damage). This project involves replacing the wooden power
poles with larger concrete power poles and transferring the power equipment
to the upgraded poles. This upgrade is being conducted along Dunlawton
Avenue from I-95 to Spruce Creek Road. This work began on Monday July 7,
2008 and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2008.

I wasn't listening to the radio
as I had company and we were eating when I saw 2 fire trucks, EVAC and
officers riding down my street. Here are some pictures of the incident
where a male subject had cut his arm. Also one of the firefighters rode
with EVAC as the patient was not stable as he had lost a lot of blood.
There was E73 and E12, EVAC 42 and two police officers on scene. The
firefighters and EVAC did a great job of trying to stablize the patient
and I believe he was taken to Halifax Hospital in Port Orange. I cannot
say how bad the injury was but I can attest to the fact that there was a
lot of blood loss here and he was really not alert while being
transported. It was learned that he cut himself at his parents house
and they were not home at the time and he ran to a neighbors for help.

PORT ORANGE, FLA Dec. 7, 2007—At 8:49
this morning, Port Orange Fire-Rescue units arrived on-scene of a
residential fire at 505 Moon Rise Drive. A column of thick smoke could be
seen from Spruce Creek Rd. as units approached. Upon arrival, crews
immediately conducted search and rescue as they suspected there might be
someone inside. A thorough search revealed that no one was inside the
residence. They quickly attacked the fire, which appears to have started in
the living room. At 9:11 a.m. the fire was completely out. The homeowners
returned home a short time later. Although the structure itself will be
salvageable, initial estimates put the damage at $275,000 due to heavy smoke
throughout. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
