2 visitors rescued from rip current
A rip current pulled two visitors from Illinois several hundred yards from shore Thursday in an unguarded area of the beach in Daytona Beach Shores, a Volusia County Beach Patrol spokesman said.
Lifeguard Christin Swan was relieving another guard at a tower in front of Frank Rendon Park about 2 p.m. and looking through binoculars to the north when she saw two people "way out there," Scott Petersohn said. She realized at least one of them was struggling, radioed for backup help, jumped on a four-wheeler and made her way up the beach "These people were at the outside break, well off the beach," Petersohn said. "One wouldn't have been a good outcome if she hadn't made it out there to help him." Both men, who are in their late 20s, were struggling, but the 28-year-old "was out of time," Petersohn said. Swan kept him afloat and threw a buoy to the other while four other lifeguards made their way to the scene to help. Emergency personnel administered oxygen for about 10 minutes, Petersohn said, but the men refused transportation to the hospital. "They were humbled," Petersohn said. "They thought they were going to die." ... more at
