Flagler County leads state in unemployment
Flagler County, once the fastest-growing county in the nation, now has the unwelcome distinction of being the county with the highest jobless rate in the state. The county's unemployment rate skyrocketed to 7.8 percent in January, up from 6.1 percent a year ago, the state Agency for Workforce Innovation reported Friday. Volusia County's unemployment rate soared to 5.1 percent from 4.1 percent a year ago.

POI raises its rates for advertising on its web site.

SEE  RATES THAT FOLLOW:

March 5, 2008

We can display a four line ad for your business
including a link to your web site if you have one, on POI's Home Page,
at the following prices:

$19.00 per month.
$52.00 for three months.
100.00 for six months.

Half and full web pages advertisements are available.

Contact us at    poimages@cfl.rr.com

The above rates will enable POI Hank to remain a

member of the Port Orange Chamber of Commerce.

Hopefully, I can keep these ad rates at the present level.

Gasoline is expensive, but revenue from Google adds

and News Media  payment for video and images

helps pay for the high cost of getting to scenes of incidents.

Everything is expensive, and costs seem to keep going up

and up.  But, we shall manage.

I only hope that the people of America

do not forget who have put us into this situation.

Most of this have not been our fault,

even those people who took advantage

of sub prime lending offers,

I don't think bare the major burden of

their mistakes, because it was no mistake

when the money lenders knew

that in two years those people

taking out mortgages would not be

able to afford them.  That was criminal

on the part of our financial institutions.

And our government watched as

America went into Hock.  ----Congress and

I have had 5 requests this month, from people

who are looking for images that POI has taken

in the past years.  Most of these are wanted for

personal reasons, but in some cases,

I cannot rule out that the people seeking past

POI images might want them for a lawyer

for use in court cases.

In the most recent request received today,

the person googled for information about

a relative's accident and came across my web site

as listed as an archive of auto accident images.

For those people whom I have promised to look

up and send them by e mail, images that they

requested, thank you for your patience,

and there is no charge to you,

as was our understanding.

However, for new requests for images from the archives,

I really have little time or interest in getting

those images for people who now decide they want them.

I will look and dig out old pictures for those who request them,

but I will have to charge, and can expect that only

those who really need or want the images

will be prepared to pay for my services.

I will ask for a $20 check to start the search,

and images found will be sent at a cost of $20.00

for each image wanted.  The original $20 search start payment

will be deducted from the total bill of delivery for one or

more images to the buyer.

Thank you very much, I think this is a wonderful service.  We've lived

absolutely the best!  Thanks for helping us keep up with what's going on

April 3, 2006

Good Evening Hank!
My name is Denise and I live just outside PO, but I work in PO and have children in PO schools. I originally hail from Patchogue, and just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your site. My family originated in Brooklyn (actually Sweden, Germany and Hungary!), moved east in the late 40's, and I was born in Brookhaven. Been in the Daytona area since 1982, but still a NY girl at heart.

I love the memories on your site....and even the mention of Robert Moses brought a smile to my face as I remember going across the Robert Moses causeway to Smith Point. They've really built a beautiful memorial there for the plane crash victims off that coast.

My grandfather, father and uncle were all Merchant Marines and I spent LOTS of time on the water and at the shipping terminals in NJ and Staten Island. My grandparents also had a marina in Patchogue Shores.

Keep up the great site...KUDOS to you for the wonderful job you are doing. My daughter is a photography student at DBCC and I've been bugging her to send you some pics.

Have a great evening!!!

Hank;

Just wanted to drop you a quick line and let you know how much I like your site. I have been a police officer for 25 years now. I retired from a municipal department in western Massachusetts, and presently am the mid shift desk Sergeant. (military) The money is great, the hours stink!! J I've been trying for two years now to convince my wife of 25 years to move with me to Florida. I fell in love with the Tampa area while deployed there at the onset of this war we're in. She won't budge. J typical New England girl. I've got her convinced on the six month split when I retire again. Looking for a home in the Carolinas, or maybe upper Florida. The hurricanes scare the heck out of her (rightfully so). Anyway, Port Orange looks like an awesome place. Thanks for the photos, and your site helps these long night shifts go by.

Respectfully;

I read your commentary and found some very interesting things.
I do not have a subscription to a newspaper.  Its not because I'm cheap
or wish to remain uninformed, I just don't have the time to sit down,
have a cup of coffee and indulge in reading the paper.

I get my news online for local, national, and international news.
I read on my time and I read local, national, and international papers.
In this way I tend to get a less biased view of what is happening.

I have added POI to my daily reading, I find it has great local news,
much more than either the News-Journal or Sentinel provides.
I'm not interested in some of the pages because they don't relate to my life.

As an amateur digital photographer I love your pictures
and might suggest that you run a mini course on digital photography
on your web pages.

These are just some of my comments and kudos for a job well done.
As much as I like a beautiful sunrise or sunset there must be
other things between them that makes life worth living
and you surely fill that with all that you do.

Pete

---------------------------------------------------------

Hello Hank;
First I must tell you how much I enjoy Port Oranges Images.
I use to wonder what was going on when I heard lots of sirens fire trucks
ambulance, police cars.  I would check the local newspaper
the next day and never find out what was happening
or I just couldn't find the time to go through the paper
to look it up. But, Now , with Port Orange Images
I am very informed about what is happening in my world.
You do an unbelievable job, I just don't know
if Port Orange knows how lucky we are to have you
and all the work that you do.
You are amazing.
Linda Mac Donald  - Port Orange, Florida
Also I am very proud to have my photo's up on your pages.
I have enclosed another image that I have taken
in my neighborhood and I will be sending more.
Thanks again for such a great service to our community.
Thanks so much

Hello Hank. Your site has the best images I've seen.
The picture of The Atlantic as you crest the Dunlawton Bridge
is most exciting.
Even as a young child in the 60's and 70's that approach was exciting
because we had driven for 8 solid hours and that was the first look at the beach.

I love the Port Orange/DBS area. I'm retiring from 25 years of work
in EMS in Alabama in about 12-18 months and want to move there.
Maybe we could start a retired public service group or something.

Anyhow, enjoyed the web site. Very nice.

Mr. Springer, hello my name is Martin .......  and I'm
writing you from Pennsylvania.  I just wanted to thank you
for creating such a great site of Port Orange pictures.  I
have some friends who moved to Port Orange about three years
ago.  This year was the first time I visited them and wound
up coming on four different occasions.  I really like Port
Orange too.  In fact, I'm recently an adult student who has
graduated with an Elementary Ed. degree.  I am trying to get
a teaching job up here and /or possibly in one of Port
Orange's fine schools.  You asked what type of Pictures you
may include I would ask some of the schools!  I've checked
into Port Orange's crime rate and was glad to find out it
was so low.  Would you know why all the surrounding areas
seem to be so high?  {Daytona, Holly Hill, etc.}  If I would
move to Port Orange I have a feeling my semi retired mother
would soon follow to find a place of her own.  Thanks for
all your efforts!  Take care, Martin

Martin, thanks for writing.  I suspect that the crime rate in Port Orange
is lower than other near by areas for two reasons;

    1.  Demographics.
    2.  Port Orange has a  professional police department that takes its job seriously
         and tolerates no nonsense.

I am not comfortable taking photos of schools during these times of
terrorism and sexual predators. But you can find out a lot about the
Volusia County School system at

Hi Hank:

What a great find!!  Came across this morning's article  "POI" in the Journal
and jumped right on your great Web Site. .

My wife and I have been residents of Port Orange for the past 15 years
but are still classified as "Snowbirds" as we spend the summer months
in Massachusetts with our family.
We do read the News Journal while up North but now we've found
"The frosting on the Cake".  Your URL is now listed in our Favorites
and will be greatly appreciated while away from home.

I spend many hours (too many) with my hobby on the computer.
Like you, I'm "Hooked" on Digital photography.
I am using a Canon G5 and Photoshop software.
Trying to learn all the tools and techniques in PS is where I spend all those hours...
. but it's fun!!

      keep up the good work,

Dear Henry and all who help create POI:

I heard of this web-site through the article in the News-Journal.  I finally sat down this a.m. to take a look around.

How in the heck do you do it?  So many events covered and absolutely excellent pictures of each - better coverage than the news itself.

I for one appreciate your dedication.  This will be a web-site frequented often by myself and I will be forwarding it on to those I know who have moved away from this area.

And, as a side-note,  what about a dating site for PO residents?  I kinda liked that idea!!!  I'd also love to see an area for homeowners willing to sell their homes at reasonable prices.  (While I understand that real estate prices have gone up in the area, some of the homes I've seen for sale used to sell for $64,000 and are now at $175,000.  There must be some willing sellers not wanting - correction- not needing  to capitalize on the sale of their homes.)

Keep up the superb work!!!

Hi There,
I read about your site in the "News Journal"
so I went and had a look,
I found it quite impressive, beautiful photography.
I would like to know what program you use "FrontPage" or "Dreamweaver" also what digital camera you use
for the impressive pictures?

Keep up the Great Work!!
Chuck R.

p.s. I plan to be a frequent visitor to the site
and spread the word about it, my wife is Australian
and all of her people "down under" will love to get the
link to this site I'm sure.

Hank,

Congratulations on the article published today in the News Journal on POI .
This should help out the old ratings!

POI does provide a convenient forum for Port Orange residents
to express their views
and I hope other readers will get involved and write to POI,
 especially on local issues.

It seems many people I talk to believe our current city council
has become somewhat "disconnected" from residents and voters,
and I have noted previously on POI, that many hold the feeling
the city council
is simply "going to do-whatever they want to do".

Sadly I have to note today- that is going to be true-until people
 start to get involved.

This is quite an admirable undertaking you have accomplished.  Lot of work.
 Beautiful images and great information.
I surfed in and around admiring the photos, reading articles, enjoying poetry etc.
But, in the back of my mind I was looking for one thing.
Information regarding parks that allow dogs on leash and off leash.
The closest one we have found is in Holly Hill.
Does Port Orange have any or do they have plans for one.
The article in today's New Journal is what brought your site to my attention.
I wish I had known about it earlier.  Many new folks in town would enjoy.
Hope today's paper brings you much attention.

New to Port Orange and loving it.

Port Orange is a great community in which to live and work. Port Orange is
fortunate to have the POI site keeping our residents informed and involved
in activities and events occurring in our City. Like a lot of people, I
regularly read the commentaries from local residents. I find them
informative and interesting. they often ask the penetrating questions about
things that are happening in Port Orange and impact our daily lives. I
attempt to respond when it is appropriate to the questions raised by
residents.

Hank: thank you for making the site available to the residents. Best Wishes

Hi, fellow Port Orange-ite... ite? hmmm, Anyway, I wanted to say
what a wonderful site you have created!  I "stumbled" upon it after doing a search on GOOGLE
for Nova Rd pics to send to a friend in Michigan who used to live in Port Orange.
I wanted her to see what was happening out in front of my house every day for 3 years now...
Yes, I live on Nova Road... oy.... .....
I love the site, I plan on visiting it quite often now that I know it exists.
I also plan on sending the site address to some friends and family
so they can get to know Port Orange also.  You said you especially like Port Orange,
I couldn't agree with you more.  I moved here from Georgia in 1983.
Moved to Philly in 1998 and came back to Port Orange in 2000.  I couldn't stay away.
Not that Philly is so bad, but home is Port Orange.
Well, goodnight for now neighbor!

June 16, 2004, from Linda, Cary, N.C.

I would most appreciate your reminisces - the cap gun story about your Mom
vengefully  throwing the gun out the window was hilarious.  It brought back
the memories of those red cap rolls  - since having a toy gun was out of the
question for me, I would sneak to the "candy store" - buy the caps and just
use a rock on the pavement directly on the caps.

The other day I appreciated reading the flood weather alert used at the top
banner  - although not living now in Port Orange, and not immediately in any
danger (!)  - I do anticipate someday sitting at my desk in Port Orange,
reading POImages, and benefiting by such timely data.

Uppermost is knowing you are out and about and can express your unique take
on events (like the mock terror drill) without risking censure.  And what's
all this fuss about turtles anyway??

Thanks again for all these efforts!

I can say without hesitation, WOW!. It is REALLY impressive and
INFORMATIVE!.  I am a beginner in photography, I don't include all the
yrs of snapshots of people., places and parties as real impressive
photography. They have their value, yes, but since I bought a digital
slr camera and have been learning all about it and how to take really
great photos, it has opened up a whole new world to me. I now grab my

My name is Melissa and I am a New Smyrna Beach Firefighter
and I also work part-time at EVAC. You recently took photos of a rollover
I worked on I 95 on March 4th. Thank you for such clear photos.
It is very difficult to capture the job I love, especially in the moment
of such rescues. I am greatly appreciative for the opportunity to add this photo
to my ever growing scrap book. . . . . . . .  These photos were beautiful.
I went on to your website and also spoke with many of my Port Orange Fire co-workers,
and they were equally as impressed as I was. Like I said before,
it is so hard to capture the candid shots that you were able to.
>From me and many other firefighters.....Keep up the Good Work!!!!!

The following e mail received Feb. 8, 2004;

Just ran across your web site and wanted to tell you

how much I appreciate  you sharing the images!

I am living in Mass. and my former police officer husband

and I are looking at possibly moving (to) the Port Orange (area)

in the next couple

of years to avoid the ice, snow and yuck we have had this winter.

I am originally from Daytona and still have family there.

Any advice for someone considering moving

and having a change of lifestyle?

Thanks!  EB

My name is Kelli and although born in New Jersey, I grew up in Port Orange from the age of 4 until I graduated high school.  I left home to attend college in DC and since then, my grandparents have passed, so I don't have a reason to visit home.  But thanks to your web site, it brought back the memory that there is a place in my heart that I miss!
DC isn't as much of a rat race as NYC (even though I am in NY all the time for clients), but I do understand why you wanted to escape.  Isn't everyone that lives in Florida from NY and NJ?
Anyhow, I wont ramble on, but I just wanted to thank you for the website. . . . . .

You are welcome, Kelli, -    Joan and I love to receive such e mails.  ---- hank and joan, POI

August 25, 2003 - Received e mail from Deb regarding We Are Family  page.

This is great! I admire your dedication to the family and your boldness to say  (The) family is important”----deb

Thank you Deb, I am glad you enjoy the

We Are Family   page.  The "We Are Family" theme did not originate with me, but is the theme for this year's "Family Days" events.  I think it is a great theme, and aptly describes the uniqueness of Port Orange, and the city's government and our civic groups appreciation and attention to family activities.  Just about everything about Port Orange is great, and the comforting family atmosphere is evident as you go around taking photos as I do.  It is so easy making the city of Port Orange the showcase of my web site, and every where I turn, another opportunity is handed to me, as in the case of the theme of 2003 "Family Days".

Henry,
Your website and pictures are just great.  I've been sending your pictures to my brother in Delaware. His wife died last Nov. and he and his daughter plan to move to Florida next winter. They're coming down in Oct. to look around for a home and he's going to give Port Orange serious consideration, thanks to your pictures.  He's 75 and wants to spend his last days where it's warm and no snow to shovel.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes,
Carolyn
